Types of Indoor Plants
I think of three categories of plants for indoor gardening: tropical houseplants, outdoor garden plants, and edible plants.
Let’s take a closer look at these different categories and how the plants may – or may not – be suitable to grow indoors.
1. Tropical Houseplants
Tropical houseplants are plants native to warm, humid regions around the world that don’t experience freezing winter temperatures. They are grown indoors for their lush or colorful foliage, and many also produce beautiful flowers. In milder plant hardiness zones where temperatures remain above freezing all year without risk of frost, some of these tropical houseplants may also be grown in an outdoor garden if conditions allow.
This guide will introduce you to the world of tropical houseplants; how they can enhance your indoor space and how to choose the right ones for your indoor garden.
2. Outdoor Garden Plants Grown Indoors
Outdoor garden plants come in all shapes and sizes, from flowering annuals and perennials to small shrubs and large trees. Not all outdoor garden plants are suitable for growing indoors. Many of them need specific conditions or seasonal temperature changes to perform their best, and others will simply grow too big for an indoor space.
It’s important to get to know the preferred growing conditions and growth habits of the plants you’re considering for your indoor garden before you bring them home. You’ll need to match their needs with the conditions – and physical space – you can provide for them.
3. Edible Plants
Growing our own food is becoming increasingly popular, and many edibles can be grown in containers indoors. The trick is to give them the right growing conditions – sufficient light, good soil, regular watering, warmth – to thrive and produce a harvest.
This guide will introduce you to growing various edibles indoors, and how to create the perfect growing conditions to reap a tasty harvest.
