The Benefits of Indoor Gardening
While some of us have limited space to grow plants outdoors, indoor gardening offers many of the same benefits.
Houseplants of all sizes – whether sitting on a windowsill, the corner of a desk, or standing tall in the corner of a room – can enhance the overall ambiance of a home. They add color and structure to any space, and some produce fragrant flowers. Different varieties of plants can be chosen to match any home decor style.
Research has shown that tending houseplants is therapeutic and reduces both physical and emotional stress. Having plants in the home contributes to a person’s overall well-being. NASA has even done research showing that certain houseplants can remove contaminants like formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air. While you may need lots of them in one space, houseplants can contribute to improved indoor air quality and human health.
In addition to the traditional tropical and flowering houseplants, it’s also possible to grow all kinds of edibles indoors. Herbs, microgreens, vegetables – even dwarf fruit trees for the ambitious indoor gardener – can all be grown indoors. Home-grown edibles just seem to taste better, and in the long term, can save money at the grocery store.
